Both the Cane Corso and Presa Canario are two very similar looking dog breeds and they are widely known for being great working partners as well as pets. However, if you aren’t familiar with the differences between these two breeds it can be very hard to identify the two. In this article we are going to talk about the differences between the two breeds and how you can use those to identify any of them!
Presa Canario
Also known as the Canary Dog, this is a breed that comes from the Canary Islands and it can also be found in Spain. They are pertaining to the Molosser breed group and initially they were used for working with livestock.
What makes the Presa Canario distinct is the fact that this breed has a very muscular, thick body and their head is massive, most of the time in the form of a square. The breed is known for their hot tempered bites and they can sometimes have their ears cropped by their owners for working or purely aesthetic reasons. The average weight for this breed is ~45kg whereas the withers height is anywhere between 57-66cm.
One thing to note about this particular breed and which does sound quite peculiar is that they have paws similar to a cat. They also tend to walk and stride like a cat. Unlike other similar breeds though they don’t have an undercoat. They do have a very short fur coat that comes in a variety of brindle and fawn shades which is generally coarse in touch. Sometimes you can see a little white in the muzzle and chest area.
The Perro de Presa Canario has a long history and was also used for family and home protection after working the livestock. True guardians by nature, they are generally aggressive towards strangers and animals that are an imminent threat. Excellent with family members, very intelligent creatures and overprotective. The Presa Canario summed up in one sentence.
Cane Corso
The Cane Corso breed comes from Italy and it’s widely used as a hunting companion. It pertains to the Italian Molosser breed group. What you will like about this breed is the fact that they have a very well-developed body. Not only that, but they can go up to 50kg and up to 70cm in height.
The skin of a Cane Corso is usually pretty tight although some specimens do have a few dewlaps and hanging jaws. The main characteristic for the Cane Corso which actually defines the breed is the slightly shorter, wide muzzle. The ears are medium sized, and owners are also known to crop them for aesthetic or working purposes. This breed is also known for having its tail docked. When it comes to their color, the breed can be see with an assortment of colors including; grey, brindle, red, black and more.
Like Presa Canario, the Cane Corso can be and has a tendency to be aggressive towards strangers. In Italy, this dog would be used to hunt boar and guardian. It’s own name Cane Corso in Latin “Cohors” which means “Guardian” and “Protector.” and is for a very good reason. This dog was known to be an awesome companion in the protection nature, and was great with family. The coat is shorter than the Presa Canario, but also coarse and stiff.
As you can see, both the Cane Corso and Presa Canario do share some similarities, especially when it comes to their size and physique. The only health issue they “share” is Hip Dysplasia, from what we know of. Personality wise, we hear very similar stories In the end, we see that buyers make their selection mostly for color choice, or “lack of” in the breed they did not choose. Both breeds have about 6 colors for UKC and AKC standards.
Encountered both breeds and see similarities or differences we haven’t mentioned? Feel free to leave a comment!
Awesome post! I follow you un instagram! I live in canary islands! I have a 12 month old male corso and 6 month old female presa! They have awesome personalities! Intelligent but in different ways!
I have the pleasure of owning a Presa Canario-Father and Cane
Corso-Mother mix. She is 5 1/2 months old and has lived with us since 10 weeks old. She is highly intelligent and her behavior is perfect in every way. She has very good manors, never has accidents in the house, has never chewed anything that she shouldn’t and she helps me with my goat herd. She’s not crazy about men and we’re not sure why but once she gets to know you she will trust you. She loves our baby grandson and when she was very little we put her in the play pen with him. I love her so much and we named her Scarlett because she has a big scare on her head perhaps from one of her litter mates. There were 10 puppies in the litter.
Corso is more dependable At least At first until he got used to being alone! Presa is more independent also playfull but súper good guardián.. Muy corso is more alloof to strangers but presa is more of a home guardián always listening to any weird sound close to home! Corso i feel he wants to protect the person more than the home itself! In the end they both complement each other nicely!
Well said!!! Corso will indeed hold ground with you as press will bolt forward . Very good point very complimentary to each other in a pac!
Thank you so much for your comment!
My cane corso pup is just as you said, more like a body guard, he is always round me, even on walks he never leaves my sight further then 5-6 meters. Yet is he is very playful and loves chasing after anything:) He takes really well when i leave him alone or in the car alone, yet i can’t leave my labrador in the car or in front of a shop for longer then half minute, otherwise he stars barking and vining.
Wow thank you for the confirmation and your remarks! Insight from a Cane Corso owner in real life events is exactly the information we love to hear! Thank you again
I have had the pleasure of owning both. I prefer thr corso for Guardia n duties with family.
45kg in presas??? Males??? No way. Not even females.
Our females are 130lbs. and males are 150lbs. That is 58.9kg for female and 68.0kg for males!
I have two female presa canarios, they are loyal to there owner, and protect your protects your home! Would never ever own any other breed! Love em!
Thanks for this article enjoyed reading! And it helped me! We have a Presa And love him best dog ever.
We’re looking to adopt a presa Canario male, he’s 3 yrs old was used for breeding at some Amish place, we lost our CC in February best dog ever I might add. And we still have a great Dane /English mastiff girl who’s 7, with hearing about sometimes dog aggression in the presa would it be a good idea to adopt him. We’d definitely do a meet and greet first, thanks for any advice!
There is a chance it can go good or bad strictly on the dogs existing behavioral issues if any. Also how strong and good you are with knowing your dogs and dog training in general. You say you have a chance to do a meet and greet which is great, just make sure you have a quick plan B if you need it! Best of luck!!
Thanks so much!
Do you export to England? Also do they have their ears cropped as I would prefer it if they did? How much are your dogs and how much bond is required?
We do! Although we do not crop any of our Presa Canario puppies ears. We support it with a proper vet, but since we would have to separate them for healing, it takes away from the mental hardening.
Great Story . Our 7 month old Presa Canario is a Love. ♡’S ALL DOGS, people and everyone…She has been socialized since day she has been brought home. Obidence classes with her & Conformation also.. Anything that involves socializing her with other dogs i try to atake her
Since when is the Presa recognized by the CKC or the AKC?!?!?
For a registrant company, we utilize FCI and UKC. We did not mention that the Presa Canario was recognized by the companies you mentioned.
I saw where he wrote “Both breeds have about 6 colors for UKC and AKC standards.” And that confused me too……glad he cleared it up
Thank you. I no longer feel confused about the two. Had a CC and loved her dearly.
What’s the difference between yours and a cane corso?
We offer Perro de Presa Canario Puppies for sale. Simply put, the Presa Canario is the Spanish Mastiff, while the Cane Corso is the Italian Mastiff. They are two completely different dogs that look extremely similar because of the linage.
Andreeaduicu
My male presa is a hulky 165 lbs. The beast In the east! Utterly amazing animal, he’s my best friend, a great guardian and home protector, awesome with company and meeting new people too! I’m ALWAYS getting stopped on our walks so people can check him out and he does a great job with them as well. Couldn’t be more pleased with the breed!
Do you have a Instagram or any other social media pages so I can see pics of him?
Yes you can follow us on Instagram as well @socalpresa or https://www.instagram.com/socalpresa/
We own both. Un-altered males, 3 years old. Love both breeds. We also have a Dane/Mastiff mix neutered male (pound puppy) also 3 years old. They are all great siblings in our home. We shave scuffles now and then but they are short lived and handled.
CC sleeps in front of whatever door puts him between us and whoever is on the other side.
Presa is everywhere I am. Dane/mastiff is definitely a follower.
All 3 breeds, bring something to the table.
Hi can anyone help my presa x cane corso is 6 months old he’s generally good however he still likes to nip not as bad now but very boisterous around the children will he calm down is this normal or shall we focus on more training
What is going to help is actual paid professional training for your dog as online guidance is not going to show you what you are doing wrong. Dog training is more for the human sometimes than the animal so to be there and part of the show is of the utmost importance. We require our clients to obtain professional training after purchasing one of our Perro de Presa Canario puppies for a reason. Good luck to you in the urgent matter
Admin, please discuss the differences in intelligence, ease of training and need for exercise between the two breeds.
We can only cover the Presa Canario which we will continue to do so over time. Since we do not work with the Cane Corso on a daily basis, it would be unfair to give partial or bias information on it. More Presa Canario articles to come and thank you sir for tuning in!
Thanks for the article.
Thanks for tuning in sir!!
I’ve had the pleasure of owning a few working breed dogs and one was actually a Perro De press Canario! Great dog, I have a question thou. What is the biggest male cane corso you have breed and have u seen any males around the 160 to 170lb weight? I know to much size restricts them from doing their duty but I’m looking for a Man Stopper and I’m down to two dogs the Cane Corso & the African Boerboel. Great post, thanks
Hey how are you? I have a just over 4 month old Cane Corso and I am considering adopting a 2 yr old Presa.I’ve been around APBT’s
Amstaffs and other staffy bull, bull terrier and CC’s and Presa’s since I was a young teen, but the dog I have the least experience with out of the ones I mentioned are for sure the Presa Canario. My question is do you think I’m putting my pup iin any more danger than if it were any other breed I was adding to my home? He is coming from a regular family in the suburbs and they say he’s good but they are also getting rid of him right. Looking at his eyes he has the same look as I’ve seen in a male CC I had and friends dogs, which is intelligent and friendly but they don’t like stress or commotions, like for example not the dog to get into a shoving match or fight in front of but my only question is towards the well being of my CC pup. Will she enjoy the ddition or feel like she has a third wheel around kind of thing and also the safety of her as I said.
There is no way we can advise you on that. The variables are way too high and nobody knows your dogs, training and lifestyle other than you. Be cautious and strict with training is about all we can advise. Always consult a reputable and local trainer you feel comfortable with for professional assistance.
If any dog comes available I would love one
If you are serious about a puppy you must reserve one on our puppy reserve page as we do not hold puppies based upon a message or call. Deposits are placed which will hold your puppy until he or she is ready.
Good summery of the breeds.
I have a 6month old male cane corso. He is a very quick learner yet a bit stubborn. He is like my second shadow:) he has great behaviour towards other dogs, and as the post said, he is alert with people but not agressive. Whoever walks near to my gate, he is puffing at them:)
Hello. I am moving to a dangerous city with my family, and although I already have dogs, I feel a guard dog will be appropriate for this situation. I have experience with doberman’s, rottweilers, German shepherd, and labs and golden’s. Do you think I can handle a presa or cane. I have four kids, that are 18, 17, 16, and 15. They all know how to handle big dogs. Is a presa a possible choice for me? (I am moving to Albuquerque, and have half an acre property)
Probably much better to not move to a dangerous city with a family. You have existing dogs and want to throw another in as a guardian? Not the Presa.. they want to be with family and we would never want to have one of ours hurt simply by being in a horrible area. There are many ways bad people could intrude on to your property with just “another dog” on site. We know this breed extremely well and would not recommend it for your upcoming situation. Being a trainer, I can tell you there’s always ways around the dog if they are staking out your house that much.
Which in the end its best to avoid the move.
I rescued a female press a from a home where she was being severely tortured, from ciggarrette burns to starvation…she took a little while to gain her trust and she made absolutely the best dog I’ve ever has the pleasure of owning…she protected my gamefowl farm, sometimes killing two coyote a night and stacking them at my door! She lost her life at 11 fighting a black bear and had lost her canine teeth at the time… I could walk her with no muzzle and no leash and dogs would be biting her and she would merely look at me and whine! At a nod of my head she would roll them like bowling balks, but not until I said so, then the slightest whisper of her name would bring her straight to my knee where she would stay..what a. awesome animal and great protector..i miss her dearly!
I have a 2 yr old female presa I love her she’s about 92pounds follows my girl and me everywhere would trade her for nothing
You must have raised her great! When brought up with the family, the Perro de Presa Canario can easily be the ultimate family companion and guardian. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
I had a CC in Brooklyn NY.
Her name was Baby. She was so precious.
She LOVED children. Such a good dog.
I love Presas too.
Absolutely beautiful and loyal.
Love to hear that! Thank you for sharing your experience 🙂
