The breed originated in the Canary Islands off the coast of Spain, where the dogs have historically been used to herd large livestock. The World Canine Association classifies the breed as a type of molosser, similar to a mastiff and is also been known to be the “Spanish Mastiff” or “Canary Mastiff”. How Big Is a Presa Canario?

A full-grown Presa Canario is a big animal, with the United Kennel Club (UKC) describing the ideal height for an adult as between 21 and 23 inches at the withers. Adult Presa Canario dogs can weigh up to 120 pounds, with the standard weight being at least 100 pounds for males and at least 85 pounds for females. Does the Presa Canario Require Training?

This breed of dog requires early training and socialization to help them with adaptation to their environment while giving them the needed walk as at when due in order for them to exercise their muscles regularly. This is because they tend to have a high activity level and failing to walk them or provide a means for them to expend the high energy will mean they might start destroying things around the house. They can be quite territorial even though they are quiet but with a frightening bark. Thieves or intruders will not be particularly encouraged to go to houses having this dog. It is highly tolerant to heat and is a good swimmer if given the necessary tutelage because it really loves water if introduced early in its life. What Does a Presa Canario Look Like?

The Presa Canario is a gorgeous and formidable dog. Its back has a sloping shape when the animal is standing up, and the adult dogs are slightly longer than they are tall. This means that their movements are graceful – some people even describe them as catlike – despite the dog’s large size. Presa Canario puppies have floppy ears, but it is customary to crop the dogs’ ears when they are young, as with several of breeds of herding dogs. They range in about 6 colors being; Fawn, Red Fawn, Silver Fawn, Red Brindle, Black Brindle and Reverse Brindle. Whatever the color of the dog’s body, a purebred Presa Canario always has a dark brown or black muzzle, usually with a black mask. The Presa Canario should not have excessive white patches in certain areas, and none on the paws or anywhere but a minimum amount on the chest. If they are Black, they should not be completely black as this breed does not come in jet black, instead being always black brindle.
