The Original Breed Standard for the Perro de Presa Canario

In the late 1970s, the author Manuel Curto Garcia of the Book “Perro de Presa Canario” set the first standard of the Perro de Presa Canario into words for an article published in Doggy People magazine. A breed standard is a description in words of what the ideal representative of a given breed should look like. This first standard was simple and was based on the descriptions of the Presa provided by old-timers who knew the dogs in the Canary Islands plus some specific dimensions- size and weight – based on the author’s first Presa (a dog named Boby ). Boby, bred by Don Aleman, of Arucas, was a typical dog for that period, of moderate height and weight, with a light-brindle coat and a superb temperament. The Spanish breed club, el Club Espanol de Presa Canario, was founded in 1982. In 1989, the Spanish Royal Canine Society accepted the standard for the Presa Canario. Solid-black dogs were not included in the first standard though they were included later that same year, when the first registration for the breed was held at the Canaries’ Fair Institution, in Las Palmas, Grand Canary, on April 28, 1989.

The standard was clearly indispensable. Without it, it was practically impossible to “picture” the new Presa, which had been bred since 1975. The standard was to become to guide for breeders. In most cases, a breed standard illustrates an imaginary dog, because the “perfect dog” that the standard describes does not exist in Nature. Mother Nature does not allow perfection in a living creature; thus, breeders attempt to produce a dog that is as close to perfection as possible. In the case of the new Presa, the standard indeed was used to recreate the breed, not just reproduce better typical Continue reading “The Original Breed Standard for the Perro de Presa Canario”

How to: Raising & Training your Perro de Presa Canario Puppy

If you are looking to get an excellent watchdog and a great protector, the Presa Canario is the best dog breed for these two purposes. Presa Canario or Dogo Canario is a mastiff dog breed that comes from the Canary Islands. Perro de Presa Canario, as it is also called, means the Canary Island Dog. Being a from the mastiff family, the Presa Canario puppy will grow to be a large and powerful dog, known for being fearless in front of danger and ready to take in any challenge without thinking twice. Such a dog will not tolerate strangers, whether they are humans, dogs, or other animals, so it is highly recommended for the Presa Canario puppy to be socialized and taught with other animals starting from a very early age, to avoid developing an unwanted and violent behavior.

Even if a Presa Canario puppy looks adorable, do have in mind that it is a strong breed of dog mentally and physically, which will be hard to manage and even dangerous in the wrong hands. Thus, it is not recommended to get a Dogo Canario if you don’t have any experience with dogs. Also, even if you had dogs before, but the soft type of breeds, it is still not recommended to get such a dog. The Presa Canario puppy needs a lot of training, done by a calm but assertive person. Using harsh and violent methods will not help at all, because they will turn this powerful dog into a very dangerous one to have around. These dogs are admitted for their physical strength and intelligence, although they can be stubborn as well, but these qualities can turn into severe defects without the proper education and training.

If you want to raise a Presa Canario puppy in the best way possible, you need to be a leader and be ready to spend a lot of time for its education. A Dogo Canario puppy needs early socialization, which should be done as often as possible, so it won’t see other dogs as threats when it grows up. This is why it is best to pick a Perro de Presa Canario puppy from a reliable breeder that does not keeps the dogs separated and away from human contact or contact with other animals, raising them in an environment where they are taught with different people, animals, and surroundings from their very first days of life.

So you have your Presa Canario puppy, after receiving clearance from the vet, continue its socialization. This means your puppy has had a full series of shots, as not doing so absolutely will put your puppy in the risk of getting parvo, or something else. In the meanwhile, we recommend not taking your puppy to public places and avoid having strangers over. Do not raise your hand or use objects to discipline your Presa Canario, as you will instill fear in its mind. Instead, use a timeout location and a harsh voice. Like children, they understand your demeanor and attitude towards them. If they think they can get away with it, they will try!

Once Take the dog to puppy kindergarten classes, visit friends, neighbors, take the dog to the park, around the city, to shops, and allow people and other dogs to come in contact with your puppy. Also, do not forget that this dog breeds needs something to do, not being happy with an inactive way of life, so make sure he has an activity and something to do all the time, plus plenty of exercising. And do consider enrolling in an obedience class with your Dogo Canario puppy, the earlier you start the better for both of you, so you can enjoy a calm, confident, and obedient dog.

This is a very basic tutorial, and you should always seek proper professional training. Do your homework as the Perro de Presa Canario will make you miserable if you are ignorant to its needs. Your breeder should absolutely address this matter and should recommend you a trainer (if available) in the area you live.

King is a robust Presa Canario that is barely starting to fill out as he is maturing. We estimate him gaining another 8-14 pounds more over the next few months as he increases slightly in width. He has an excellent bond with this family of mostly girls, and is playful, but fearsome to strangers and intruders. When his family is away he is in charge of the property and to thwart off baddies with ease. Easy to leave home unattended when you have a “King” to your disposal.

Stud: SocalPresa King | Height: 30″ Withers | Weight: 158lbs. | Color: Brindle

Bella is a force to be reckoned with her “gamey” style personality comes out and she wants to go on the hunt. Very “cat like” and quick on her feet, its easy to see that she would make a great companion to hunters. True to her pictures on here, she does none the sort and the only hunt she attends is searching the perimeter for intruders. She is fully trained and will not leave the backyard unless directed to. Very smart and eager to please, she is a pleasure to keep around as she requires little attention but is so gentle and sweet when you give her it.

Dam: SocalPresa Bella | Height: 26″ Withers Weight: 123lbs. | Color: Red Fawn
